Ice Climbing Stage 2026 – Frozen Waterfalls in Valle d’Aosta ❄️🧗‍♂️

Ice climbing on frozen waterfalls is an incredibly fascinating discipline, which allows you to climb real frozen water flows using technical ice axes and crampons, fully immersed in a unique winter environment. ❄️[web:29][web:35]

With Direzione Verticale, we take you to Valle d’Aosta for two intense days of ice climbing, together with qualified local mountain guides – perfect both for those who want to start from scratch and for climbers wishing to improve their ice technique. 🏔️[web:29][web:32]



📅 Dates and schedule

  • Dates: 9 and 10 January 2026
  • Location: Valle d’Aosta (area selected according to weather and ice conditions)
  • Duration: 2 full days of icefall climbing
  • Guides: Local UIAGM mountain guides

Day 1 🧊

  • Transfer to the area selected according to conditions.
  • Course presentation, gear check, and equipment briefing.
  • Safety, knots, and first steps on low-angle ice in top rope.

Day 2 🧊

  • Top-rope climbing on low-angle and steeper ice.
  • Learning the basic technique for climbing vertical ice.
  • Return to your respective destinations in the afternoon.

🎯 Course goals

This stage is designed for those who already have some rock climbing experience and want to explore the world of ice, but it is also suitable for motivated beginners: climbing frozen waterfalls is much more accessible than you might think! 💪[web:38]

Together with the mountain guides you will learn:

  • Piolet traction technique.
  • Reading ice formations and choosing the safest, most logical line.
  • Correct use of ice screws, rope management, and ice anchors.

  • Climbers and alpinists who wish to refine their technique and awareness on ice.

✅ Minimum requirements

  • Good general physical condition.
  • Basic experience in climbing or mountaineering recommended (not strictly mandatory in all cases).
  • No fear of a bit of cold and a strong desire to challenge yourself. 😉








🧳 Required equipment

  • Harness *
  • Helmet *
  • Technical crampons *
  • Technical ice tools for piolet traction *
  • Mountaineering or insulated winter trekking boots
  • Warm layered clothing and waterproof shell
  • Two pairs of gloves (one light, one warm)
  • Thermos for hot drinks ☕
  • Packed lunch / energy snacks

💰 What the fee includes

  • Instruction and supervision by a local UIAGM mountain guide.
  • Use of standard safety equipment.
  • Possibility to rent missing technical gear (ice tools, crampons, harness, helmet).

  • Travel to and from the activity location.
  • Guide’s transport costs to the activity area (shared among participants, if needed).
  • Half-board accommodation.
  • Guide’s expenses (meals and accommodation), to be shared among participants.
